Fresh Picked Home Grown Apples...
hand picked each day at Royal Oak Farm Orchard!

Our three orchards, North, South and East cover over 50 acres, so be prepared to walk a lot. We have over 17,000 trees and not all our 30 varieties are all ripe all at the same time.  It's best to wear closed toe shoes rather than sandles or flip flops and do not wear red or yellow if you can avoid it.  Unfortunately, bees and yellow jackets are attracted to both red and yellow, and the yellow jackets like broken apples on the ground, so sandles or flip flops make it easier to get your toes stung!  Click here for a copy of our U-Pick Guide with more picking information for your trip to the orchard!

Royal Oak Farm Orchard hand picked apples are the freshest. Unlike store produce, Royal Oak Farm Orchard apples are opened for U-Pick at their peak ripeness and tested for sugar content each day. We have over 17,000 trees and not all our 30 varieties are all ripe all at the same time.  We will pick no apple before it's time!  You can tell how ripe an apple is by how much starch it contains.  A very ripe apple will contain little starch, while a young apple will be mostly starch, particularly when compared to sugar. As an apple ripens, the starch is converted into sugar, so the fruit grows more palatable as it ripens. The conversion process starts at the apple’s core, then progresses outward to the apple’s skin. The presence or lack of starch can affect an apple’s flavor. An apple that has not had sufficient time to ripen may lack sweetness because more starch is present than sugar. As an apple matures, the increasing amount of sugar will cause a sweeter flavor.  So we don't like to open varieties for picking until they have that maximum sugar so you can enjoy their peak flavor!

Anyone who has plucked a ripe, sun-ripened crisp apple right from the tree and promptly eaten it knows what a taste difference there really is. The freshest apples are also the most nutritious. They are picked ripe with their full complement of vitamins.  So, after the apples are tested for sugar content, we mark our U-Pick rows with yellow flags on the end of each row only when the apples reach their peak ripeness so you know where to pick the freshest, most ripe apples each day! So, once you enter the orchard, only pick on those rows marked with the bright yellow flags to assure you are getting the freshest and best apples that day!
Since the presence of a lot of starch can affect an apple’s flavor, an apple that has not had sufficient time to ripen will have more starch present than sugar. This, combined with the acid present in the apple, can have an adverse effect on one's stomach.  So, to avoid an upset stomach, please do not pick and eat apples that are not ripe yet!

The list below identifies the ripening order for our apple varieties. Use this list to help choose apple varieties which are ready to pick at different times throughout the season. The harvest dates listed here are approximate for northern Illinois and are dependent upon weather conditions.  Please give us a call at 815-648-4141 before coming to pick your favorite variety. Even though our picking schedule is updated regularly during the harvest season, our picking schedule can change from hour to hour due to weather conditions and the number of visitors we have for U-Pick each day!  Be sure to clear your browser cache before viewing our U-Pick Variety Schedule or reload the page for the latest updates .
